When we talk about the pet shelter crisis, there are many factors at play—economic pressures and having to sell your first born child if you are trying to find a place to rent that allows pets to name a few. But one of the leading contributors often goes overlooked by the general public: backyard breeding, or B.Y.B.

Backyard breeding is the practice of breeding animals for profit or convenience rather than for the welfare of the animals. Unlike ethical breeders, backyard breeders often skip essential health testing, neglect genetic screening, and fail to provide proper care (even if they are providing proper care, it’s still not okay). This not only harms the animals directly involved but also contributes to the larger issue of pet overpopulation. Puppies and kittens from these operations often end up in shelters or rescues, where they compete for homes with countless other animals in need, taking up space and resources. This leads to hundreds of thousands of dogs being euthanized.

The problem is compounded by demand. When people buy animals from backyard breeders—often because of impulse, blissful ignorance, or the allure of “designer” breeds—they unintentionally support these harmful practices. Each purchase encourages more breeding, perpetuating the cycle and creating more animals who will face health problems, neglect, or a life in a shelter. Just because the puppy you purchased is in a good home with you, doesn’t mean its countless littermates are…

Choosing to adopt or seek out ethical breeders isn’t just a personal choice—it’s a statement that animal welfare matters. By understanding the impact of backyard breeding and your purchasing power, we can make more informed decisions, help reduce pet overpopulation, and ensure all animals have the healthy, happy lives they deserve. You cannot love dogs and support backyard breeders. Adopt or shop responsibly.
