Its not about how fast you get there

This may come as no surprise but Boonies are not naturally road-tripping dogs. Coming from a six by twelve mile long island, their longest ride and top speed experience maxes out at fifteen minutes and forty five miles per hour. Despite their initial apprehension to high speeds and stop and go traffic, our dogs have come to love spending time in the car as they know it always leads to a fun, Boonie centered, adventure.

Over the past two years, we have piled into our Subaru many times and taken road-trips so that our three Boonie dogs can come along for the ride too. In addition to not wanting to pay an arm and a leg for a pet sitter in D.C. for three weird dogs, vacationing with Boonies in tow has become one of our favorite things to do. When they’re around, we naturally slow down and stop to smell the flowers, literally. We pull over and explore sights we would have never bothered stopping for, skip the hotel room to pitch a tent (although I must say, our bougie Boonies have come to prefer a clean bed to a sleeping bag), and enjoy the ride.

After a long five days of driving on Highway 50 from its very start and braving thunderstorms and flies stuck in the car along the way (Tequila’s top two enemies), we made it to Pueblo, CO for the great Boonie reunion! With eight Boonie dogs (Nellie, Lottie, Tequila, Faline, Alice,Squishy, Lady, and Brandy) and two Boonie cats, Bindi and Lloyd, it’s safe to say that Boonie Babies headquarters has officially relocated and is going strong.

Road Trip Essentials

Rule number one to any successful road trip is ensuring that the kids are comfortable and taken care of. In our case, that means making sure our three Boonies have plenty of space to relax and good food to eat so that we can sit back and enjoy our favorite podcasts. Here are are road trip essentials, guaranteed to improve any trip no matter the length.

• If you are traveling with pets, a backseat cover is a must! Not only does it keep your dogs comfy cozy by giving them more space to curl up in but it also helps keep your car clean! • This is the life hack we never knew we needed: an attachable poop bag holder that is also a flash light! Aria and I have actually never had an attachable poop bag holder to put on a leash before now and I don’t know how I lived so long without it. Additionally, the rechargeable flashlight allows you to safely find poops to secure them in the bag and is great in general for late night walks. This may be our favorite dog device yet. • Good food! While driving, it is essential to pack good snacks and stop for whatever delicious food you may find along the way. We love getting pup cups for the girls with our morning coffee and sneaking them a piece of a french fry as its their vacation too.
