Saipan Scramble: All Things Boonie Happening On Island This Month

As per usual, the past few weeks have been chaotic for Saipan’s boonies, but that’s just the way we like it! In case you have missed any of the exciting, impactful, and inspiring things the island’s animal community has been able to make happen, here’s a recap:

Four Boonie Babies residents, in addition to two Saipan Humane dogs, took flight this week and are headed to their new lives on the mainland! As you are reading this, all boonies should be arriving at their destinations after nearly three days flying across the world.

Cricket is arriving in Colorado Springs where her new mom, Boonie Babies volunteer Sarah, will be picking her up.

Sarah this August on Saipan, where she fell in love with Cricket.

Bug is being welcomed home by former Saipan resident Amber and previous Boonie Babies rescue Rina, another adorable low rider. Their mom clearly has a type (and we love to see it).

A nervous Bug about to embark on a long but worthwhile journey.

Sydney, a mama dog we pulled from the shelter on euthanasia day, will be flying to New Orleans on October 28 where Boonie Babies volunteer Natalie and her boonie Lucy are anxiously awaiting her arrival. It's safe to say, Natalie also has a type. Her flight is sponsored through Henry, the dog (and newly human) dad behind @KeepingFinn on Instagram.

Sydney was too excited when she heard she’d have a new sister that she wouldn’t hold still for a photo.

Lucy awaits her new boonie sister in New Orleans. Remember her from Boonie of the Week a couple months back?

Billie and Love are headed to Vancouver, Canada where Boonie Babies volunteers Tara and Trent will be fostering them until they are adopted. We’d like to thank Billie’s sponsor for making her trip possible!

Remi, a Saipan Humane rescue, was taken from the Saipan mayor’s shelter. He was mangey, skinny, and had the best personality—the team couldn’t resist helping him. He went to a foster home and has found an adopter on a +100 acre farm in Oregon where he can run and run. His flight was fundraised by Boonie Flight Project

Nelson at the Saipan airport pre-flight.

Nelson was also saved from the shelter by Saipan Humane. He was scared and mentally shut down. Typically, dogs like him are euthanized—but some donors came together to help him, and the rescue Buster's Pawprints has taken him in. He is doing great with them!

Wiley, found downtown with a rope around his neck and an injured leg, is lucky enough to be another one of the boonies hand selected and sponsored by Henry. He will be flying to his new human, Luke, early November.

Wiley is a temporary Boonie Babies resident until his flight next month.

In addition to an insane flight schedule, Saipan Humane, in collaboration with the Banfield foundation, has been hosting a spay and neuter clinic. The Banfield Foundation, which aims to collaborate with non-profits in providing preventative care and emergency veterinary care, shelter, and disaster relief to vulnerable pets at home and in under-resourced communities across the nation, continues to provide Saipan with life-saving animal care and resources. Through Boonie Babies donations, we were able to cover the cost of 40 surgeries!

Living on a U.S. territory, it is typically very difficult to find organizations able and willing to provide assistance. We are extremely lucky and grateful to have the Banfield Foundation’s continued support. We cannot thank them enough for sending Dr. Nelson and veterinary technician Sonja to help us, and KeepingFinn’s Henry to help save some dogs! An extended thank you to Saipan Humane for working around the clock to make this partnership happen. In just seven days, 242 surgeries have been completed—including four life-saving limb amputations!

Saipan Cares, another animal non-profit organization, will be hosting a spay and neuter clinic October 29 - November 11. It truly takes a village to make a difference and save all of these lives. It has been such an amazing month for the boonies of Saipan and we are so excited to see progress continue to be made as everyone works to come together, on and off island, to save the boonies!

Boonie of the Week

Meet Cricket!

We stumbled across cricket by accident as we were driving home through a Saipan neighborhood. She lay defeated in the middle of a parking lot just roasting in direct sunlight.

Of course we pulled over and hopped out to offer food and see if she’d let us scoop her up. She hobbled right over, skin and bones, missing most of her fur, and covered in wounds and pressure sores. Despite this rough condition, Cricket made a full recovery in no time and showed off her spunky, happy-go-lucky personality to all she met, including new BB volunteer Sarah who fell in love pretty quickly.

If you would like to help welcome Cricket to her furever home, please check out the Amazon wishlist we have created for this amazing first-time dog mom. Sarah flew across the world to donate her time and heart to these animals so we would like to extend our gratitude for her continued dedication to Boonie Babies. All items purchased from this list will be shipped directly to Cricket and Sarah.

As always, the efforts of Boonie Babies are made possible solely through your donations. Thank you for your continued support in our mission to save the boonies and make our islands a better place for all who call them home.
