Boonie Babies Saipan
Spotlight: Saipan Humane Society
One thing that is incredibly important to us is to learn from and support others working in the animal rescue scene. Boonie Babies would not have the platform that we have today if not for the thousands of people across the United States and the world who care about rescue animals. Some of those incredible people work right here on Saipan; over the years, Boonie Babies has collaborated with Saipan Humane Society to organize clinics, share information, and otherwise navigate the scary world of rescue on a remote island.
What is Saipan Humane Socity?
Saipan Humane Society was founded with a vision to make our islands a better place for animals and the people who love them. Initially, we focused on large-scale spay/neuter efforts and supporting the local shelter, but that quickly evolved. By community demand, we rapidly grew to fill the critical role of a low-cost animal health clinic for community pets and rescues. With no veterinarian living in the CNMI, you can imagine how challenging this is! Our clinic offers a mix of general wellness, emergency care, and everything in between. We rely on mentorship and training from wonderful volunteer veterinarians and technicians, as well as support from organizations like the Banfield Foundation. Operating an animal health clinic with limited resources and diagnostics is challenging, but we do our best to help as many patients as possible. Currently, we are seeing over 500 patients per month! We strive to be as low-cost as possible, balancing access to care with ensuring we have sufficient funds to operate properly.
Beyond our clinic work, we continue to coordinate large spay/neuter clinics and support the local shelter with training, euthanasia services, and small-scale rescue efforts. We also support animal welfare initiatives and assist with other community needs to the best of our abilities. One of our favorite recent memories is accompanying Grace to file a police report regarding an animal abuse incident and getting a puppy adopted by the officer across the counter!

Boonie of the Week
Meet Tequila! This week’s Boonie of the Week is our birthday girl, Tequila! Found abandoned at a popular dog dumping site with her mom, Mango, and sister, Margarita, this once shy pup now has quite the spunky personality. The newly one-year-old Tequila, also known as our “Curly Q Queen” for her uniquely curled tail, only responds if you sing “Tequila Tequila” to the tune of “Shakira Shakira” from her favorite song, “Hips Don’t Lie.” |
One of our most playful Boonies, she loves nothing more than convincing everyone at Boonie Babies Headquarters to chase her on the beach, eventually retreating into the water for safety. This water bug also loves swimming, puppuccino runs to Cha, and using her big brown eyes to convince Grace to let her sleep in her bed.
Not often do we get to see puppies grow up and experience life as a regular pet. The majority of puppies found on Saipan are euthanized for health issues or a simple lack of space and resources. Luckily for her, Tequila has officially been adopted by Boonie Babies’s own Grace and recently celebrated her first birthday surrounded by friends (canine and human alike). It has been so special getting to see her personality blossom and being able to provide her with the life all boonies deserve. She has brought our team so much happiness amidst the heartbreak of rescue.
