Dog Mom Core

The definition of ‘Dog Mom’ is an affectionate term for a female pet owner who treats her dog as her child, providing deep care, protection, and unconditional love. The term is often a cause of discontent, with many feeling that the word “mom” is not an appropriate title for someone only caring for an animal, versus a human child. Despite this, the ‘Dog Mom’ movement continues to grow in popularity. As more people decide to have kids later in life, or not at all, dogs have become integrated socially in our world more and more. From the stay at home pets or yard guards they once were, the role they play in our lives continues to grow and change. Along with this change in what dogs mean to us and the role they play, the time, care, money, emotions, energy, and more spent raising a dog have grown and changed exponentially.

First and foremost, this is not a competition with human (a.k.a. ‘skin baby’) moms. There is obviously no competition when it comes to the sacrifice and dedication required to raise a human child. The unique challenges faced by both are simply not the same. However, many of the positives such as the joy, love, laughter, excitement, happiness, and devotion? Those just might be.

Different Journey, Same Heart

As a true ‘Dog Mom’, not just a pet owner, my entire life revolves around the dogs and their happiness. My vacations get planned around when a family member can watch the girls. Road-trips happen every summer so that they can come along too. I splurge on expensive, delicious dog food (click HERE to check it out and use code BOONIEBABIES10 for 10% off) and cry about how much I love them every time I have one too many glasses of wine (so only two glasses). There is not a single aspect of my life that doesn’t include the dogs. Truthfully, there isn't a single major life decision that isn't built around them. If my husband hadn’t loved the dogs as much as I do, we simply wouldn’t be married. From the next move to future job selections, every choice is weighed against one non-negotiable question: What would be best for the dogs?

More Than a Title

Making practical decisions for their benefit is only the beginning. The physical effort and tangible care are essential, but the title of "mom" isn't bought, it's earned through the emotional weight of the bond we share with these little, furry creatures.

They are our favorite hellos, bursting with pure, unadulterated joy even if we’ve only been behind the bathroom door for two minutes. They are our hardest goodbyes, offering up those big, pitiful eyes that make us question if leaving the house is ever really worth it. They teach us patience, fill the simplest moments with joy, and love us endlessly. We give up our spot on the couch and in bed, our once hairless and unscratched floors, our schedules, and so much more for them. Not because we have to, but because we want to. And in return, they give us a companionship and love unlike anything else you’ve ever shared or felt before with another living creature.

Being a “mom” isn’t about what type of “baby” you have, but how you are willing to love and care for that “baby”. So call it whatever you want: pet owner, guardian, or Dog Mom. At the end of the day, it's a love. A real, profound, life changing love that I would never want to live without.
