Becoming a Boonie Mom: How a Boonie and a Poodle Became Siblings
For many of us, the world of animal rescue is so familiar that we forget that some people have never really been exposed to it. It’s hard to understand the extent of the crisis if you haven’t seen it with your own eyes. Maybe you’ve only known dogs from breeders or pet stores. If you’ve only recently begun learning about animal rescue, don’t fret. It’s never too late to learn.
When our grandma first came to visit Saipan, she knew we rescued dogs but didn’t really understand the scope of our work. For years, she had only owned dogs from pet stores, as it was what she knew. Then she came to the island.
My 8 year old poodle Betty died and I was heartbroken! After a while I went back to the same pet store and purchased another poodle, Douglas. I thought I knew about rescue dogs because my granddaughters Grace and Aria have a dog rescue on the island of Saipan. I even sent money at times to help their rescue. When I left Colorado to visit family on the Island, I was excited to see a dog rescue and oh boy did I learn so much more! The island is beautiful, with an ocean that is crystal clear. However, not a great place to be if you are a dog. I saw wild dogs everywhere. Some were hit by cars and some were starving.
Seeing my granddaughters’ rescue changed me forever. I felt guilt, shame, and embarrassment that I would buy a dog at a pet store before rescuing one, because these dogs don’t deserve the life they have to endure. Grace and Aria would rescue puppies and starving dogs that couldn't take care of themselves and then place them in the best homes for each specific dog. These poor dogs would have died on the streets without this rescue and it was incredible to watch them be saved! I also thought about all the dogs back in the states that needed a loving home and a fighting chance to have a good life.
Well, you’ve probably guessed, I now have a rescue dog! Her name is Anna and she is a boonie from the island of Saipan. She is the most loving and thankful dog I have ever had. I will never go back to a pet store to purchase a dog because the opportunity to adopt is so much more fulfilling. I will rescue my future dogs. Anna is now a spoiled boonie dog living her best life in the states!

Boonie of the Week
These unlikely siblings, Anna and Douglas, being couch potatoes with their mom. | Meet Anna!Originally Angelica, Anna was brought to Boonie Babies with her sisters Eliza and Peggy by a police officer who had found the small pups during her shift. Anna and her sister Eliza now live their lives as spoiled boonies in the states. Unfortunately, Peggy did not get a spot on the plane, was never adopted on-island, and was eventually euthanized. |
Deciding that euthanasia is the best—and often only—option for a dog is always painful, but this one broke our hearts a little extra being that she was so close to making it out with her sisters. The world of rescue is filled with so much heartbreak, but it makes the little wins, like seeing Anna grow old, so much more fulfilling and worth it.
Spay & neuter saves lives
This week, our visiting vet was able to fix dozens of cats and dogs, thanks to your support and generosity.
All donations to our spay and neuter fundraiser will continue to be used to sponsor surgeries on the island. Thank you Danielle and everyone else who has donated so far.
My sponsorship is in honour of the pregnant dog that had to be euthanized to prevent more suffering ❤️ Thank you for all that you do, even when the calls you have to make are difficult.
