Beauty For Boonies

Miss Earth is a major annual international beauty pageant based in the Philippines which advocates for environmental awareness, conservation, and social responsibility. With the motto “beauty for a cause”, Miss Earth is one of the “Big Four” beauty pageants along with Miss World, Miss Universe, and Miss International.

This past weekend, Aria was crowned Miss Northern Marianas Earth and also took home two additional titles: ‘Best in Swimsuit’ and ‘Miss Earth Environmental Leader’ (thank goodness we spent so much time rescuing dogs in bikinis to prepare!). If you know anything about her, you know this couldn’t be further out of her comfort zone or typical interests. However, in the name of ‘Saving the Boonies’ and with hopes to draw more attention to our cause, she donned the heels on and won the crown! Aria hopes to use her new platform to inspire action on environmental issues affecting both local residents and Boonie dogs.

There really couldn’t be a more deserving or fit person to represent the CNMI at Miss Earth. Aria has dedicated her life to saving the Boonies and making our islands a better place for all who call them home, displaying all the qualities of Miss Earth long before competing for the official title. Aria is the true representation of beauty for a cause and we can’t wait to watch her compete at the international pageant this November, taking Boonie Babies and the CNMI to a global stage!

For the native costume portion, Aria’s costume embodied the spirit of the “Boonies” and in true Boonie Babies fashion and even featured a Boonie pup!

Meet Smoosh!

Story Submitted By Laura Taylor

Since leaving Saipan, Smoosh has become quite the traveler. She arrived in Seattle, Washington in February 2021 and has settled into stateside life ever since. Her hair fully grew back revealing a surprise speckled chest and white socks on her front paws. After a short month in Seattle, Smoosh spent two and a half spoiled years in Atlanta, Georgia where she got to experience seasons and squirrels for the first time. She also now has a little brother, a gray tabby cat named Milo, that she did not ask for. However Smoosh and Milo make typical siblings and I regularly catch them sleeping next to each other. Smoosh currently lives in the San Francisco bay area with her two parents, Laura and Arturo.

Smoosh was one of first dogs we ever rescued. To learn more about her beginning story and time on Saipan, click HERE to watch her video feature on Instagram.
